Story
Opened in 2022, Tārgale Wind Park quickly became a cornerstone of Latvia’s renewable energy infrastructure, with an impressive annual generation capacity of 155 GWh. However, like many wind-based projects, it faced a critical challenge: managing the variability of energy production caused by changing weather conditions.
Utilitas Wind, Latvia’s largest wind energy producer, recognized the urgent need for a solution that would allow surplus energy generated during high-wind periods to be stored when demand peaked and properly deployed when production dipped. To further strengthen grid stability and energy security, Utilitas initiated the integration of a large-scale energy storage system into the existing wind farm operations.

Solution
Hoymiles was selected as a key technology provider for the energy storage expansion. We supplied essential components to support the system’s performance and reliability, including 3,450 kW Power Conversion System (PCS) containers on the AC side and 3.44 MWh battery containers on the DC side.
The result was a robust 20 MWh energy storage facility that enables Tārgale Wind Park to capture excess renewable energy and release it back to the grid when needed. With a €7 million investment backing this project, Utilitas and Hoymiles demonstrated a shared commitment to advancing cutting-edge, sustainable energy infrastructure.

Success
The launch of the Tārgale energy storage system marks a significant leap forward for Latvia’s clean energy transition. It enhances the stability of the national grid, strengthens energy security across the Baltic region, and provides a scalable model for future renewable projects.
Looking ahead, Hoymiles remains committed to supporting global partners like Utilitas with innovative solutions that drive renewable energy initiatives forward, empowering communities and industries worldwide with smarter, more reliable solar and energy storage solutions.
Success
"It is essential to build new green energy capacity to ensure the resilience and smooth operation of our energy systems as we prepare for a key transition early next year. We are clearly moving in the right direction".
—Kaspars Melnis, Minister for Climate and Energy at the opening ceremony.
