To put it into perspective, if your solar power is enough for home use, the surplus solar energy will be charged to the MS; and if MS is fully charged, the excess power will go to the grid. If your solar system cannot sustain your home electricity use, the smart meter will detect that your home is draining power from the grid; then the MS will start to discharge power to meet your home demand.

So the result is, when supported by Shelly meter, your MS can smartly control charging and discharging even if it is not connected with the inverter.
