    Building Grid Flexibility for a Renewable Energy Future

    As renewable energy penetration continues to grow across Europe, grid stability and flexibility have become critical challenges. Wind power generation is highly variable, requiring advanced energy storage solutions to balance supply and demand while maximizing the value of renewable assets.

    In Latvia, the operator of the Tārgale wind park was looking for a reliable energy storage solution to improve grid integration, participate in frequency regulation markets, and enhance the operational flexibility of its renewable energy project.

    The first phase of the project, commissioned in November 2024, marked Latvia’s first and largest energy storage project at the time, with a capacity of 10.32 MW/20.64 MWh. Following the successful operation of Phase I, the project owner selected Hoymiles again for Phase II at the same site—demonstrating confidence in Hoymiles’ technology and system performance.

    With both phases completed, the Tārgale wind park storage project has reached a total capacity of approximately 20 MW/40 MWh, becoming one of the largest wind + storage clusters in the Baltic region.

  • Solution

    A Proven ESS Solution Designed for Grid Support

    For both project phases, Hoymiles provided its HoyPrime containerized Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), delivering a complete solution designed for large-scale renewable energy integration.

    The system features:

    • High-performance PCS-MV Stations with an AC-side rated power of 3.45 MW per unit

    • 20-foot battery containers with a DC-side capacity of 3.44 MWh each

    • Intelligent temperature control technology for stable operation under different environmental conditions

    • Multiple redundant insulation designs to enhance system safety and reliability

    Supporting applications including primary frequency regulation and fast voltage regulation, HoyPrime helps stabilize grid operations while improving the economic value of renewable energy assets.

    The success of Phase I validated the system’s performance in real-world grid applications. Strong response capability, reliable operation, and effective participation in balancing markets gave the project owner the confidence to expand the solution through Phase II.


  • Success

    Scaling Storage Capacity and Unlocking Greater Grid Value

    Following the completion of Phase I, the project owner signed the Phase II contract with Hoymiles in May 2025. Within just nine months, the second phase successfully entered commercial operation in February 2026.

    The two independently deployed systems are centrally dispatched, creating a larger and more flexible energy storage cluster with enhanced grid regulation capability.

    The completed project has significantly strengthened the Tārgale wind park’s ability to support grid stability and participate in Latvia’s frequency regulation and balancing markets.

    Proven Technology Leads to Repeat Deployment

    The adoption of the same mature technology solution for Phase II reflects the reliability, stability, and operational performance demonstrated during Phase I.

    Supporting Renewable Energy Integration

    The project provides a practical example of how wind power combined with energy storage can improve grid resilience and enable higher renewable energy penetration.

    Customer Value Beyond a Single Project

    From the completion of Phase I in November 2024 to the commissioning of Phase II in February 2026, Hoymiles helped increase the energy storage capacity at the same site from 20.64 MWh to more than 41.28 MWh.

    For Hoymiles, the Tārgale wind + storage project represents more than a successful overseas deployment—it demonstrates how reliable energy storage technology can create long-term value for renewable energy operators.

    Moving forward, Hoymiles will continue working with global partners to deliver smarter, safer, and more flexible energy storage solutions that accelerate the transition toward a cleaner energy future.
